Chapter 7. Playing Ker-splosh with Debbie Stewart.

The 'Cottage', Chippenden Road, Wyeburn, 10 a.m. Sunday, 2nd December, 2001.

Me and Marty-mum were walking by the stream, wrapped up against a still rather frosty morning. There were times when Mum took me for a walk by the stream because hey, it's a nice day and a pleasant walk in company would do us good. And there were times when it was her way of dragging me off to one side to have 'a quiet word'. This was clearly one of those times and it was just a question of seeing how much trouble I was in.

"Haze," she said hesitantly- here it came. "That was amazing what you did on Friday night. I'm still not quite sure how you managed it, but would you do me another little favour?"

"What do you need?" I asked nervously. Maybe I wasn't dead after all.

"Would you clear off for a day or two? You know how your sister's been angling for you to go up and see her in Manchester, well let's face it, next weekend is the last one of term and I think she'll be hurt if you don't go. And then, well, your Mum and I could have a day or two, well, you know Baby, just us two, to make up properly and be together, nice and romantic."

And that girls and boys is a close as any Mum is ever going to come to saying: 'Me and your Mum have had a real falling out and now we need you out of the house for a bit because we're planning to have make-up sex until the windows rattle.

"It's a deal," I said happily. "I'd really love a few days with Roshie. Does she know she's invited me?"

"I thought I'd tell her when we get back to the house," Marty grinned. "Thanks Baby, I know it'll take you away from Annie, but it's only one weekend."

St. Ann's School for Girls, Saltbury, 9 a.m. Monday, 3rd December, 2001.

We were all assembled in the main hall at the start of another week and, as ever, the staff filed onto the stage in order of seniority, led by the headmistress. In theory we were here for a daily act of religious observance, as laid down by some statute or other. But in fact we were here for one reason only, to listen to Miss Stone's announcements. Nevertheless, the proper forms must be observed, so we had a hymn and a prayer before the main event.

St. Ann's attitude to religion was sometimes hard to discern, but when you are named after an apocryphal saint, things can become a bit tenuous. We were Christian, in a rather vague, C of E sort of way, and the junior years received Religious Education classes, which in my day pretty much said: 'Yes indeed girls, religions definitely exist and who knows, there might even be gods as well'. Religion was the sort of thing Miss Stone thought her 'gels' might be encouraged to have, although displays of enthusiasm would be rather more unseemly.
